10 mandatory apps for Shootings

Written by Overshot

(On February 2019 !)

By chance, We’ve launched Overshot Media while smartphones were taking over the World. I had an iPhone 4 at this time, and even if I’m a gook in the soul, I’ve upgraded it only twice, for iPhone 6, and now iPhone X. Technology is going so fast, I tried to keep up-to-date to progress and synchronize the potential of my smartphone with the shooting devices. Here’s my top 10 apps, a lot are already on your phone, but are sorely underestimated compared to their possibilities !

Red Tools

This smart light app contains useful figures about Red cameras use:

  • Crop factor
  • Recording time
  • Flicker-free video
  • Depth of field
  • Panning speed
  • Exposure difference
I admit that I don’t use all those features, but the crop factor or the recording time are always easier to have here that to try to calculate !

Fool control

Little Gem. Cf Focus in Video, Fool control part !

Canon Camera Connect

After 3 Canon DSLRs, I had my first one taking into account wi-fi connection on last year: the 5D mkIV. And what a revolution ! As gadget as it looks, the main feature is to take control of all the shooting features wireless (except zooming !) and the response time is quick enough in my opinion to be used as external screen (on a Ronin by example) Be cafeful to the battery life though.
I had a wi-fi SD card on the 5D mkIII and 7D mkII which allows to transfer quickly images to a smartphone, but having this feature available independently to storage device is a real confort.

Gopro

OK, now having passed to the GoPro 7 Black including a screen, it might be not mandatory. But whatever, it’s really easier to display rushes on a smartphone than on this little screen ! Also, the possibility to transfer quickly photos and videos (for social networks by example) is pretty useful.
Also, if you have a GoPro without screen and having Wi-fi, this one become mandatory !

DJi Go 4

I you want to fly a DJi drone… This one is already on your smartphone ! Despite I’ll advice to use it on iPad (iPad Mini to use without adapters) to have a wider view. I had the opportunity to use it from first version on Phantom 3, and I’ve never been disapointed: just try all shooting settings (exposure and others) before being in the air, it will save you some precious seconds !

Leetchi

I think I’ll have to write a complete article of the only day this app saved an important deal. Note that some automatic flying features are now available on DJi apps, but on first try, the accuracy of the drone route coming from some points set on a map just amazed me.

Google Maps

The most powerful tool ever. From spotting to live colleagues positionnning, and to ensure to route in any circumstance. Example: Night trail race team shooting.

Messenger / Whatsapp

Communication is key. For a team discussion, for a customer meeting (Skype is cool too), to just send some pictures or documents quickly… I’ll prefer Messenger with the possibility to contact people found on Facebook without having their contact before, and the link with a Facebook professional page.

Instagram

Can you imagine what did you do on your smartphone before Instagram ? As useful in inspiration as in information or communication, it’s a must-have for any brand, but I don’t teach you anything here !
